How to select door and window sealing strips?

Many friends pay attention to quality when purchasing doors and windows, but they often overlook the door and window sealing strip. It should be noted that although the sealing strip is inconspicuous, it is also very important, and it has a great impact on the use of doors and windows!

The function of door and window sealing strips:

Sealant strips play an important role in waterproofing, sealing, and energy-saving in plastic steel doors and windows, bridge cut aluminum doors and windows, and wooden doors and windows, providing sound insulation, dust prevention, frost resistance, and warmth preservation. It must have strong tensile strength, good elasticity, as well as good temperature resistance and aging resistance.

In order to ensure the fastening of the adhesive strip and the profile, the cross-sectional structural size of the adhesive strip must match the plastic steel door and window profile.

Sealant strips are generally used for casement doors and windows, hanging windows, and folding doors and windows. The main functions are dust prevention, insect prevention, waterproofing, sound insulation, sealing, etc.

Material of door and window sealing strips:

The door and window sealing strips on the market are generally formed by extrusion of materials such as PVC, modified PVC, EPDM, elastomer sealing strips (including TPV, TPE, TPR, SEBS), and silicone.

Types of door and window sealing strips:

Window sealing strips can be divided into three categories according to their different uses: door leaf and door cover sealing strips, wool strips, and glass sealing strips (adhesive strips).

The sealing strip of the door leaf cover is mainly used for sealing between the door panel and the door frame, the wool strip is mainly used for sealing between the door frame and the door leaf, and the glass sealing strip is mainly used for sealing between the glass and the door leaf and frame.

Precautions for installing door and window sealing strips:

  1. The rubber sealing strip cannot be pulled too tightly, and the cutting length is 2O-3Omm longer than the assembly length. When installing, it should be embedded in place, with a flat surface and close contact with the glass and glass grooves to ensure even stress around the glass. At the corner, the rubber strip should be cut off on an inclined plane and firmly bonded with adhesive at the cut off point.
  2. When using sealant to fill and fix the glass, rubber strips or blocks should be used to squeeze the glass first, leaving a gap for glue injection. The depth of glue injection should not be less than 5mm. Before the glue is cured, the glass should be kept free from vibration.

  1. The installation position of the wool strip is generally on the window (door) leaf, the surrounding area of the frame leaf, or the sealing bridge (wind blocking) to enhance the sealing between the frame and the leaf.
  2. The specification of wool top is an important factor affecting the sliding doors and windows and the watertight performance, as well as the opening and closing force of doors and windows. If the size of the wool strip is too large or the vertical hair is too high, it not only makes assembly difficult, but also increases the resistance to door and window movement, especially the initial resistance when opening and the final resistance when closing.
  3. The specification is too small, or the height of the vertical wool strip is not enough, which can easily detach from the groove, greatly reducing the sealing performance of the doors and windows. The wool top needs to undergo silicification treatment, and the appearance of qualified wool top is flat and straight on the surface. The bottom plate and vertical hair are smooth, without bending, and there are no pits on the bottom plate, meeting the specification of 0.2mm

How to select door and window sealing strips?

  1. Smell the taste

Smell through your nose to see if there is any odor. Normal PVC materials only have a slightly mellow odor, which can be almost ignored.

  1. Pull with your hands

Take a sealing strip and tear it at its thinnest part. The greater the force, the higher the adhesive content. This means that the comprehensive performance of this sealing strip is very good, so you can consider purchasing it.

Hold the sealing strip in your hand and pull it towards both ends like a rope. First, check if it can break, and then check if it can rebound to its original length. The better the elasticity of the sealing strip, the less it will deform due to long-term closing pressure of the door after installation.

  1. Scrape with nails

Sealing strips with poor materials and low adhesive content are prone to being scratched white on the surface. After installation on the door, any hard object collision or slight scratch can cause the sealing strip to "break" and be very unattractive.

  1. Observing the surface

Some cheaper sealing strip fillers may be abundant, so the surface may not be very shiny. Those that are very cheap and have a shiny appearance are not recommended. Furthermore, it is important to check whether the cross-sectional joint of the sealing strip has a similar brightness to the surface color of the sealing strip. If it is close, it indicates that there is not much filling material in the sealing strip material and can be purchased.

  1. High temperature testing

Wrap the sealing strip tightly around the profile as much as possible and leave it at high temperature for a period of time (placed on the roof or in a sunny area). Observe whether there is any dirt or discoloration on the contact surface between the profile and the sealing strip, whether the dust on the surface of the sealing strip turns yellow (if there is oil on the surface of the sealing strip, it is easy to absorb soil), whether it is stained or dirty. The surface of the high-quality sealing strip is smooth, dustproof, oil-resistant, and high-temperature resistant, Under high temperature irradiation, there will be no yellowing, oil leakage, or hand contamination.

  1. Weigh the sealing strip of the same material

If the same amount of sealing strip material is good, the weight is light. Adding talcum powder, heavy calcium, etc. to the sealing strip to increase the product weight is much heavier than adding light calcium carbonate. In the sales of sealing strips, pricing is based on weight. Therefore, when selecting sealing strips, it is necessary to weigh the sealing strips of the same material and model.
